Most small businesses operate from a home office, and why not? It’s cheaper, comfortable, and makes commuting a breeze. My office is off our bedroom so I roll out of bed in the morning, pour myself a bowl of homemade organic museli and turn on my computer. I’m at work!
Many small business owners and freelancers want to know how to set up their office to promote good work habits and increase their productivity. I offer you four tips groomed from my years slaving over my home computer desk.
Plan for the Long Term
If your long-term business plan has you working from home, you need to incorporate your long-term strategies into you home office set-up.
Before you begin, talk to an office-furniture expert or your chiropractor about appropriate office furniture. Buy a decent quality chair and correctly alligned desk ONCE and never worry about your office health again.
Include the storage space you WILL need and not the space you CURRENTLY need. Ditto for any production areas you need.
Use Sustainable Methods
Nowadays we’re more conscious than ever about our impact on the enviroment. Often, manufacturers coat their office furniture in cheap, plastic or silicon laminate which leech chemicals into the air. If you ever throw this furniture away, it harms the soil as it biodegrates. Choose a sturdy desk made of a sustainable material like wood finished with natural varnishes.
Look for office appliences that utelize efficient methods – small power supplies, enviromentally-friendly materials, etc.
Employ Adaquete Office Lighting
Working all day at a computer screen causes eyestrain if you’re not careful. Invest in good quality lighting placed strategically around your office. Don’t allow glare from lights or windows to reflect on your computer screen.
An Organizer
To keep track of appointments, deadlines and shipment dates, I use the inbuild Office Outlook scheduler and an $8 office diary from my local newsagent. I like the way the Outlook organizer pops up to remind me of things I’ve forgotten, but I also use the paper organizer to take out and about – places I can’t take my bulky PC.
Keep Work and Fun Seperate
In order to be productive you need to place yourself in a ‘working’ headspace. You can’t do that if the kids are running around at your feet or the TV’s blaring in the background.
Situate your home office in an area you can dedicate ENTIRELY to work – preferebly a seperate room with a door you can close. Ensure your wonderful family know that during work hours you are only available for emergancies. They’re your family – they’ll understand.
Organizing your home office need not be a nightmare. If you plan ahead and incorporate your office organization into your overall business plan, you set yourself up for success for years to come.
